Our Annual Report and Accounts 2021-22 sets out the significant progress made towards our mission of cleaning up and decommissioning the UK’s civil nuclear sites, despite another challenging year responding to changing COVID-19 restrictions.
Sellafield saw a major skyline change with the removal of a diffuser that sat on top of its 125m high Windscale Pile Chimney.
Meanwhile, Magnox has successfully transferred its first active waste package into its new interim storage facility at Chapelcross. Dounreay retrieved more than 1,800 litres of radioactive sodium from the base of its Prototype Fast Reactor.
Our work crossed international borders, with Nuclear Transport Solutions successfully delivering MOX fuel assemblies to Japan. And work to identify a suitable site and willing community to host a Geological Disposal Facility also progressed, with four communities now engaged in the process.
This year has seen some further important steps towards establishing our future group structure. All our Site Licence Companies are now subsidiaries and Nuclear Waste Services launched in January 2022, bringing together the capabilities of LLW Repository Ltd and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd to form one waste-focused organisation. We also announced that, subject to regulatory agreement, Dounreay will join with Magnox in 2023.
We’ve also published sustainability and diversity and inclusion strategies as we focus, not just on what we deliver, but how we deliver it.
