Our Annual Report and Accounts 2023 to 2024 sets out continued mission progress, from safely decommissioning the NDA’s existing sites to preparing to take responsibility for more, while managing radioactive waste for our existing programme and new nuclear.
Sellafield is removing waste from all four of its legacy ponds and silos for the first time, representing a significant step on our journey to prioritise high-hazard reduction and decommission our complex and challenging facilities. Final capping of historic trenches and vaults at the Nuclear Waste Services LLW Repository has also commenced, while Nuclear Restoration Services has completed the shipping of 1,000 drums of waste from its Winfrith site to the LLW Repository for disposal. This project was the accumulation of eight years of work and saw different parts of the NDA group join forces to deliver the project. Nuclear Restoration Services and Nuclear Waste Services worked together with Nuclear Transport Solutions, who safely and securely transported the material between the sites via rail.
The NDA group is also being trusted to do more, as preparations continue for the transfer of the Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor fleet for decommissioning, as well as the potential for the Vulcan site which sits adjacent to Dounreay to be decommissioned by the NDA group. Nuclear Transport Solutions also continues to support nuclear and non-nuclear customers.
Safety continues to be the NDA group’s highest priority and, while the year has seen an increase in some incident rates, we’re taking the appropriate steps to maintain focus.
The report also highlights our work developing skills, supporting a supply chain of around 5,000 companies and contributing to the communities in which we operate. We’ve doubled the number of NDA group graduate programme opportunities available in 2024 to 120, with more than 1,000 graduates and apprentices following our early careers programmes as part of a £45 million annual investment.
