Salary range: £58,140 to £68,400 dependent on skills and experience

Base location:  Flexible – Herdus House, West Cumbria, Hinton House, Warrington; London or Harwell, Oxfordshire

Hybrid working available with 40% of time in an NDA office

Reports to:  Director of Health, Safety & Environment

The role:

The UK’s nuclear energy programme, dating from the post-war years, has left a mixed legacy to the country: numerous prototype reactors, fuel-manufacturing plants, research centers, reprocessing plants and 11 power stations. This has resulted in one of the worlds most complex environmental decommissioning and remediation challenges. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for an environment professional to help the NDA deliver its environment strategy and to help our operating companies maintain and improve their performance.

The objectives for the 2021-26 NDA Environment strategy are:

  1. To ensure that our mission outcomes and the journey to deliver them is environmentally sustainable;
  2. To improve and protect the environment.

The role of the NDA Environment Manager will be to contribute to the delivery of that strategy, leading on specific areas within it. It is anticipated the team will be made up of three experienced staff each leading in a different area of delivery but with capability and an expectation to work together across the strategy delivery plan as a whole;

  • Environmental sustainability in NDA group, including carbon management
  • NDA role in Assurance of environmental capability and performance at the NDA and in its subsidiary businesses.
  • Environmental lead for cross group programmes of land optimisation and integrated decommissioning
  • Each Environment Manager will be a policy and legislation subject matter expert for environmental matters. This role will focus principally, but not exclusively, across on the first area of work.

Accountabilities:

  • To lead our collaboration with the NDA group on carbon management in support of our commitment to be carbon net zero by 2050.
  • To lead on NDA group’s carbon net zero vision and strategy.
  • Working with the NDA group to set carbon reduction pathways and targets.
  • Identifying and embedding carbon management good practice in the NDA group.
  • Understanding and meeting the carbon management needs and challenges of the NDA group.
  • Accounting and reporting the NDA group carbon footprint.
  • Providing reports and advice on carbon management to senior leaders within the NDA group.
  • Raising awareness through training and comms and encouraging behavioural change within the NDA group.
  • Represent the NDA group with external stakeholders, sharing our carbon management successes and challenges and bringing learning back to the NDA group.
  • Leading on delivery of greening government commitments within NDA.
  • Delivery of, or support to other elements of the Environment Strategy, along with provision of environmental technical support as required.
  • To develop and maintain relevant interfaces internally within the NDA group, with regulators, government and other organisations as relevant. Supporting the development of a collaborative environment community, supporting the identification, transfer and embedding of good practice.

Knowledge, skills and experience required:

  • Degree in science or environment (or equivalent).
  • Chartered membership of a corporate institution is desirable.
  • Experience of operating in the management and/or regulation of environmental protection in the nuclear or wider industries.
  • Negotiating and good interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Good working knowledge of environmental regulation and standards applied in high hazard industry.
