Details
The Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales regulate the disposal of radioactive waste at and from nuclear sites in England and Wales.
These reports have been prepared with the help of nuclear site operators. They present information on environmental performance for the nuclear industry in England and Wales.
The December 2016 report shows that the nuclear industry maintained a good level of environmental performance in 2015. The industry has progressed against almost all sector plan objectives, and continue to liaise regularly with interested groups.
Despite positive progress overall, there needs to be specific progress on:
- increasing rates of packaging and conditioning intermediate level waste
- reducing discharges to meet UK discharge strategy objectives
Attention also needs to be given to structural issues such as:
- developing new radioactive waste treatment technologies
- matching the forecast supply of radioactive waste to planned future waste disposal capacity
This will be the last annual report in this format. It includes a summary of progress made over the last 11 years. Information on the environmental performance of the nuclear industry will continue to be published through other channels. These are signposted in the report.
Email the Environment Agency if you have any questions or comments about the report: nrg.south@environment-agency.gov.uk.
