The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) made a commitment to consider the possibilities of reducing the overall costs, environmental impacts and timescales of decommissioning by consolidating Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) management at fewer locations.
The 2 credible options papers published in May 2013 offer significant opportunities of this nature:
-
optimising the number and location of interim Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) storage facilities on Magnox Limited and EDF Energy sites in England and Wales – Credible Options
-
optimising the number and location of FED Treatment (Dissolution) Facilities in Magnox Limited – Credible Options
Comments were requested on these papers. We also received feedback at a number of stakeholder workshops and meetings following publication of the papers. All comments and feedback were considered when determining the preferred option for each of the projects.
We published this preferred option in a joint paper for comment in November 2013.
Following the appointment of a new Parent Body Organisation in September 2014, Magnox undertook a review of their waste strategy. This included revisiting the draft preferred option for the ILW storage and FED treatment strategy.
As well as considering wider issues of waste packaging, the review took account of the comments received on the draft preferred option and the input from stakeholders throughout the process. A final preferred option was determined in March 2015.
