Number of suicides committed in UK detention centres, 2009 to 2013
Published 14 January 2014
Since 2009 there has been 1 death in an immigration removal centre where the coroner has returned a verdict as either suicide or a self-inflicted death. This occurred at Campsfield House on 2 August 2011.
All deaths in immigration detention are subject of a police investigation and the prisons and probation ombudsman (PPO) carry out their own independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding each death. The PPO took on this responsibility from April 2004. The remit of the investigation includes all relevant matters for which the Home Office is responsible.
