1. Overview
The Chevening Scholarships Scheme is the UK government’s largest international scholarship programme, aimed at creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers and decision-makers in priority countries. This includes future leaders who may contribute to the development of their home countries. As set out in the National Strategic Defence and Security Review, Chevening directly supports the UK government priorities to project our global influence by administering awards for young people of high ability to study in the UK. It also supports the four objectives of the UK’s Aid Strategy.
2. FCO objectives for Chevening scholarships
Chevening not only supports individuals to develop professionally and academically enabling them to assist with their own country’s development, it also contributes to a range of the UK’s national security, business, education, economic and cultural objectives by:
- increasing understanding between the UK and other countries and, promoting the exchange of information and ideas
- enabling the UK and its businesses to engage successfully with the leaders of the future through opportunities to formally partner with Chevening
- asserting the UK’s influence as a global education player, showcasing our leading educational establishments to the world, and widening the perspective of UK students
- spreading awareness and respect for UK culture, governance, and projecting our values such as openness, tolerance and diversity
3. Official Develoment and Cheveing scholarships
Chevening helps to develop future leaders, decision makers and influencers professionally and academically. It supports scholars across a wide range of subject areas including in science and technology, media and creative industries, law and business, finance and economics, and public services and civil society.
Chevening Scholars are required under the terms of their awards to return to their country of origin following the completion of their courses. This enables them to utilise their new skills and abilities to contribute to the development of their home countries.
4. Project objectives for Chevening scholarships
This programme focuses key workstreams to:
- support the long term development of ODA eligible countries by developing the skills and abilities of young people of high academic attainment
- develop and nurture relationships between the UK and former Scholars. This allows the UK to engage with and invest in future leaders, helping us to work better together in the future
5. Geographical coverage
Chevening is global in scope, operating in over 140 countries and Overseas Territories, excluding the United States and countries in the European Union.
