National survey results involving dental examinations of 12 year olds who attended mainstream, state funded schools across England from 2008 to 2009.

Results of this survey show:
- 33.4% of pupils were found to have experience of caries, having one or more teeth which were decayed to dentinal level, extracted or filled because of caries
- the remaining 66.6% were free from visually obvious dental decay
- 19.3% of pupils wanted to have their teeth straightened, were willing to wear a brace and were eligible to receive orthodontic care on the NHS
- 77% reported brushing twice daily or more frequently, leaving a quarter brushing less frequently than recommended to gain the maximum benefit
