Details

The Emissions Reduction Pledge was a voluntary target for the wider public and higher education sectors in England. The target aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across these sectors by 30% by 2020 to 2021, compared to a 2009 to 2010 baseline.

The target was introduced in the 2017 Clean Growth Strategy.

The Pledge enabled organisations to:

  • make a public declaration of their intention to reduce emissions
  • receive public recognition for doing so

The Emissions Reduction Pledge is now closed. We have published a list of all organisations that signed up.

Some parts of the wider public and higher education sectors already had carbon targets in place or were subject to mandatory or voluntary reporting schemes. It is also recognised that some sectors and local areas had already set ambitious 2020 targets which aimed to deliver more than a 30% reduction in emissions.
