This paper summarises the available evidence on the impact of outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on the UK economy and what drives outward FDI decisions. It looks at:

  • recent trends in UK outward FDI
  • the impact of outward FDI on the UK economy
  • the role of Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs)

The report is part of a series of analytical papers supporting the ‘Trade and investment for growth’ white paper published in February 2011.
