In an increasingly globalised market the issue of harmonised patent laws is becoming more salient for patent offices and businesses. A grace period for patent protection is viewed as an important element of substantive patent law harmonisation, alongside publication of applications at 18 months, treatment of conflicting applications and prior user rights.
