This information is part of the UK commitment to the World Health Organization (WHO) global polio eradication programme. The document also includes guidance on enhanced enteroviral surveillance.

These guidelines are aimed at public health professionals and laboratory staff and include:

  • surveillance of suspected cases of AFP (acute flaccid paralysis)
  • advice on public health management of suspected cases and consideration of post-exposure prophylaxis
  • appropriate samples required for confirmation of infection
  • containment requirements for storage and usage of polio viruses
