Improving development impact in Small Island Developing States: implementing effectiveness principles

Details

The Principles for improving development impact in SIDS were launched on 14 December 2022 at the Effective Development Cooperation Summit in Geneva. They aim to help make aid funding more effective, by providing specific guidance to address the unique challenges that SIDS face.

The Principles identify priority areas for working with SIDS. They provide high-level advice for development co-operation organisations and SIDS themselves. They offer policy solutions, based on evidence from development partners and multilateral organisations along with the perspectives of SIDS themselves.

Development cooperation supports SIDS to build resilience, work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and recover from COVID-19. Recognising this, the COVID-19 Contact Group of Development Ministers commissioned the Principles in 2020, working with SIDS and multilateral organisations. The Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada co-chaired this work. They worked closely with a Technical Advisory Group which included:

  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
  • United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA)
  • United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN OHRLLLS)
  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
  • SIDS representatives
  • development partners
  • World Bank
