Details
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) carries out independent investigations into deaths and complaints in custody.
PPO has 2 main duties:
- to investigate complaints made by prisoners, young people in detention (prisons and secure training centres), offenders under probation supervision and immigration detainees
- to investigate deaths of prisoners, young people in detention, approved premises’ residents and immigration detainees due to any cause, including any apparent suicides and natural causes.
PPO’s annual report 2017 to 2018 was laid before Parliament by the Secretary of State for Justice by Command of Her Majesty. Command Papers are considered by the government to be of interest to Parliament but are not required to be presented by legislation.
