Protection and promotion of rights of LGBTI+ people in Europe and the Commonwealth: UK-Cyprus memorandum of understanding

The governments of the UK and Cyprus signed a memorandum of understanding on protecting and promoting LGBTI+ people's rights in Europe and in the Commonwealth.

Details

The Minister of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus, Stephie Dracos, and the Minister of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom, Amanda Milling, signed this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), at a virtual ceremony on 22 February 2022, in Nicosia and London.

The MoU outlines what the 2 countries have done to promote and build an inclusive society where LGBTI+ people have the same opportunities and enjoy equal rights, without any form of discrimination. It sets specific outputs for:

  • closer cooperation of the 2 countries within the European Governmental LGBTI+ Focal Points Network and the Equal Rights Coalition
  • closer cooperation to promote LGBTI+ rights in the Commonwealth
  • actions to promote the benefits of diversity and LGBTI+ equality in the workplace

The MoU demonstrates the importance the 2 governments give to the protection of the LGBTI+ rights, and their commitment to further bolstering and advancing this protection.
