Details
The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has issued an alert on the identification of falsified rabies vaccine in circulation in Zimbabwe in January 2025.
The falsified vaccine is labelled as ‘Abhayrab’, but there are discrepancies in the manufacturer and Zimbabwean registration details. There is no evidence that the product has been distributed outside Zimbabwe.
Healthcare professionals with concerns about a patient who may have received falsified rabies vaccine in Zimbabwe can call the UKHSA Rabies and Immunoglobulin Service (RIgS) for further advice.
The current lots of human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG) in use in England are:
- JRC22352C, the potency is 211 IU/ml, vial volume is 3 ml
- JRC24208, the potency is 345 IU/ml, vial volume is 1.6 ml
Please check the batch number you are issuing.
Return completed risk assessment form to the vaccine clerk, Rabies and Immunoglobulin Service by email to RIGS@ukhsa.gov.uk or PHE.ig.clerks@nhs.net
