Radioactivity in food and the environment, 2004 to 2021
In 2022, the UK environment and food standards agencies, in collaboration with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) produced the UK’s 8th report on the application of best available techniques (BAT) and best environmental practice (BEP) , covering the period 2017 to 2021, to satisfy the requirements of OSPAR recommendation 2018/01. This report was laid before OSPAR’s Radioactive Substances Committee in early 2023 for review before presentation to the main commission that year. More information on the application of BAT and BEP, can be found at the link below.

The BAT report is split into two sections, Part 1 on the UK report of the application of BAT in civil nuclear facilities (2017 to 2021) and part 2 Summary of Radioactivity in food and the environment in the UK (2004 to 2021). This second part presents the long-term trends in discharges, environmental monitoring and dose data as presented in the annual Radioactivity in Food and the Environment report series produced by the UK environment and food standards agencies (the RIFE partners).
