Seven major respiratory viruses reported from UKHSA and NHS laboratories (SGSS) in England and Wales between week 14, 2014 and week 15, 2024

Updated 16 May 2024

These 2 charts (Figure 1 and Figure 2) show the weekly distribution (using a 3-week moving average method) of the number of samples that tested positive for 7 major respiratory viruses.

The 7 viruses are:

  • influenza A
  • influenza B
  • RSV
  • rhinovirus
  • parainfluenza
  • adenovirus
  • human metapneumovirus

These viruses were reported from UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS laboratories’ surveillance database, the Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS).

Trends should be interpreted in the context of testing practices. Over time, there has been wider implementation of molecular testing (laboratory and point of care) for respiratory viruses.
