Updated 25 July 2024

Voluntary Returns Service (VRS) process overview

The Voluntary Returns Service (VRS) offers practical support to people in the UK without the right to reside who have decided to return home. The service will guide people through the process of returning home, which will take place in a series of phases.

Phase 1

Application and assessment

You can apply online or via a phone call to 0300 004 0202. Your application will then be initially assessed by VRS to determine your eligibility.

Phase 2

Understanding your needs

The VRS will discuss whether voluntary return is right for you and also what level of practical support you need to get home, including financial assistance, the need for a travel document and when you wish to travel. The use of a translator can be used if required.

Phase 3

Meeting your needs

The VRS will then make the necessary arrangements to support your return home, which may include working with internal colleagues and external contractors to meet your specific needs. The VRS will maintain communications with you during this process.

Phase 4

Departing from the UK

The VRS will explain how and when you will return home, including travel to the place of departure and how you will receive any additional support that you need.
