This revised direction requires ongoing engagement with the commissioner. The chair of the council’s improvement board will also need to provide the Secretary of State with quarterly update reports on the council’s ongoing improvement work.
An independent report by the DfE-appointed Commissioner for Children’s Services in Middlesbrough recommended that the council be allowed to retain control of the delivery of children’s social care services subject to a 6-month and 12-month review of progress.
The commissioner was appointed following a report by Ofsted that judged children’s social care services in Middlesbrough to be inadequate.
This direction replaces the earlier statutory direction issued to the council in March 2020.
This direction has closed and a direction issued by the DfE on 3 March 2022 replaces it.
