This improvement notice was lifted on 8 February 2021 following a review of Reading borough council’s children’s social care services.

This revised direction requires the council to:

• work with Brighter Futures for Children and other partners to improve services
• continue to work with the DfE-appointed commissioner and officials

This follows:

• a 5 August 2016 Ofsted report which judged that the council’s children’s social care services were inadequate
• a subsequent process of improvement including the development of Brighter Futures for Children

This direction replaces the earlier statutory direction issued in September 2017.
