The Environment Agency has received a revision to capacity for an application to vary an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 involving substantial change to a permit from Thameside Energy Recovery Facility Limited.

Regulated facility type

The facility is an installation permitted under Section 5.1 A(1)(b) activity ‘the Incineration of non-hazardous waste in a waste co-incineration plant with a capacity exceeding 3 tonnes per hour’ under the Environmental Permitting Regulations. This application is to vary the permit as follows:

  • Change the incineration technology from a moving grate with spreader stoker system to an inclined moving grate with ram feeder

  • Increase the annual capacity of the installation from 170,000 tonnes per annum to 379,658 tonnes per annum

  • Change the firing diagram to

  • increase the thermal capacity from 57 MWth to 126.4 MWth and

  • increase the throughput from 14.9 t/h to 43.3 t/h

  • Update the site layout

  • Remove the SRF preparation facility and associated infrastructure

  • Change the SNCR reagent from urea to ammonia solution

  • Add non-hazardous wastes to the permitted waste types
