In the 2021 Net Zero Strategy, government set out that biomass has a role to play in the UK strategy for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The Net Zero Strategy followed a call for evidence on the role of biomass in achieving net zero, responses to which highlighted the need for further public engagement on the uses of biomass and associated technologies, such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
We commissioned a public dialogue in collaboration with UKRI’s Sciencewise to explore the UK public’s view on the role of biomass in achieving net zero. The evidence gathered through this dialogue and presented in this report has informed the development of the Biomass Strategy and associated policies.
