This guidance provides information on compliance with the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) including:

  • applying for and maintaining an account with the RTFO Administrator
  • the obligations that the RTFO puts on certain fuel suppliers and how it is met
  • applying for renewable transport fuel certificates
  • how and when to submit fuel quantities to the RTFO Administrator
  • civil penalties

Suppliers covered by the RTFO scheme need to be aware of the legislation and the subsequent amendments. The original 2007 RTFO Order has been periodically amended since it came into force.

RTFO compliance updates

The Department for Transport’s (DfT’s) Low Carbon Fuels (LCF) Delivery Unit runs regular stakeholder events with updates on important developments. The team regularly engages with account holders and wider stakeholders, including periodic account holder communications throughout the year.
