The Government’s ambitious approach to saving money has delivered £3.75 billion in savings from May 2010 to March 2011. This followed Francis Maude’s pledge to leave “no stone unturned” in the hunt for more savings at the centre of Government.
The objective of this audit was to provide the Cabinet Office Efficiency and Reform Group (ERG) Chief Operating Officer with an independent and objective verification on these savings. This validation has been carried out by Cabinet Office’s internal audit service at the request of ERG. The Cabinet Office’s internal audit service is provided under Service Level Agreement by the Department for Communities & Local Government Internal Audit Service.
Internal Audit reports provide private advice to the Accounting Officer and it is recognised that failure to observe the private nature of that advice may undermine the effectiveness of Internal Audit. However, in this instance, given the level of public interest in the report we have taken the exceptional decision to make it available.
