The Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) programme connects government organisations with innovative businesses to solve big challenges facing society. It has two main objectives:
- To stimulate innovation in the economy by supporting firms to develop new technology-based products and solutions;
- To provide government departments and their agencies with new, cost-effective, innovative solutions.
Despite the successful application of SBRI within many organisations, the public sector is still not taking full advantage of SBRI’s potential. Its use and method of implementation varies widely across government. Many transport policy teams are unaware of its potential to help address their challenges.
SBRI - Transport Priorities Review for UKRI report
This review focuses on the transport sector. It considers how SBRI is applied to public sector challenges in this sector and explores how Innovate UK can support wider uptake. The review has four key aims:
- Assess the level of awareness of SBRI across public sector transport bodies.
- Understand the extent to which SBRI had been used within the transport sector and the benefits and drawbacks encountered.
- Identify transport challenges that exist across all modes of transport.
- Develop transport challenges from the information gathered, with at least two challenges developed in detail.
The report makes recommendations for raising awareness, supporting effective use of SBRI, and identifies potential transport challenges where SBRI could help deliver solutions. The report also provides best practice, advice and guidance on developing challenge statements.
