Details
An external research agency completed quantitative and qualitative research relating to the segmentation of businesses.
Allocating businesses to segments helps improve targeting, design, and delivery of export promotion services to UK businesses. This makes sure that export support is most tailored to different business needs.
The quantitative research:
- identified segments of businesses based on their current exporting status, attitudes towards exporting and other variables
- used data from 3 waves of the national survey of UK registered businesses exporting behaviours attitudes and needs to identify the key UK businesses’ segments

The qualitative research:
- provided an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of the segments
- developed pen portraits of the segments
- was based on 60 one-hour interviews with SME business owners and managers with a minimum turnover of £500,000 across the UK
