This review includes information on our carbon footprint, non-radiological environmental impacts, radiological dose, impacts on groundwater and management of solid waste.
The key points are:
- radioactive discharges (aerial and liquid) were well below the permitted limits and were generally lower than those in 2022. Significant reductions in tritium, carbon-14 and krypton-85 were related to the cessation of Magnox fuel reprocessing in July 2022.
- this report also includes estimated radiological doses to members of the public. It concludes that exposure, even to the most exposed group, remains very low and much lower than the limit for exposure to radiation in the UK.
- direct carbon emissions are in the region of 170,000 tonnes of CO2e, an estimated 44% below our Carbon Management Plan ‘business as usual’ trajectory.
- we continue to manage our routine groundwater monitoring programme with the addition of a further 9 new boreholes on site alongside an enhanced programme of monitoring, in support of our Magnox Swarf Storage Silo leak management plan
All statutory monitoring and reporting requirements were delivered in accordance with permits, including monitoring of local beaches and the ongoing collation, analysis and reporting of waste discharge and disposal data that underpins our environmental performance.
