The station error management system coordinator (SEMSCo) course will no longer be delivered at CoAST or elsewhere from 16 Oct 2018. The STEP Stakeholder working group are working with Baines Simmons to develop the Effective Error Management (EEM) Course that will fill this training need early 2019. If you have any queries regarding this, please contact your STEP POC.

The below text has been retained for context and advice.

Course aim

The aim of the SEMSCo course is to:

  • increase understanding of error management systems (EMS), safety management systems (SMS), and the critical link between the two
  • provide a clear understanding of the role of a SEMSCo and the critical nature of that post in supporting an effective EMS and SMS within their organisation
  • increase understanding of the importance of just cultures, reporting cultures and learning cultures. In additional to providing personnel with an ability to identify when these cultures require development.
  • provide an understanding of the investigation process, its centrality to the EMS, and the proactive steps delegates can take to support their organisation’s occurrence investigators
  • provide an understanding of the occurrence review group (ORG) process, its centrality to the EMS and proactive steps personnel can take to support their organisation’s ORG process

The SEMSCo course includes content from the Effective Error Management (EEM) and Local Error Management System Coordinator (LEMSCo) training - it is envisioned that individuals completing the SEMSCo course should not need to attend the EEM and LEMSCo training separately. The EEM JPA competency will be awarded to individuals successfully completing the SEMSCo training.

The course also provides understanding of the Occurrence Review Group (ORG) and Occurrence Investigation (OI) processes - it is anticipated that this will remove the need for individuals to attend the OI and ORG courses, unless the individual is directly conducting investigations themselves or are members (not observers) of ORGs.

Applicability

This course provides role specific training for individuals fulfilling station error management system coordinator (SEMSCo) posts, or other posts with similar responsibilities.

Individuals undertaking deputy SEMSCo roles are also welcome to attend this training if course slots are available.

Prerequisites

Before individuals attend the course, they must have completed Human Factors and Error Management foundation level training. As the SEMSCo training is fast paced and practical in nature, individuals may be asked to leave the course if they do not have this foundation level knowledge. An error management refresh awareness pack (EMRAP) is available for delegates as pre-reading to refresh their foundation knowledge.

Duration

3 days.

Location
