SIA request for in-house security roles to be made licensable

Published 3 September 2024

Request

  1. Has the SIA, under the new government, returned to the Home Office or minister to revisit their earlier request to introduce business licensing and remove the in-house exemption?
  2. If the SIA has revisited this request, what response has been received?
  3. If the response is still pending, what is the likely time frame for receiving a response?
  4. How will the SIA announce any developments regarding this matter?

Response

I can confirm that the SIA holds some of this information.

Question 1

The SIA has formally welcomed the appointment of the new ministers, and confirmed to them that the SIA remains in support of the adoption of both mandatory business licensing and the extension of mandatory licensing for in-house CCTV and in-house Security Guarding (SG) roles. This is because it would significantly improve public safety outcomes. Both suggested changes were supported by industry research and stakeholder feedback.

At this early stage, the SIA has had no specific response on this matter yet.

Questions 2 to 4

The SIA does not hold this information.
