Sizewell C Limited: application made to impound water

Published 23 January 2025

Applies to England

Details of the application

Sizewell C Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of water at the site of the realigned Sizewell Drain at Sizewell, Leiston, IP16 4UR. The impoundment works include construction of an adjustable tilting weir at the new connection between Sizewell Drain and Leiston Drain, and the installation of four pipe dams along the realigned Sizewell Drain. This forms part of the permanent Sizewell Drain realignment works associated with the construction of a bridge over the Leiston Drain to facilitate access between the Main Construction Area and Temporary Construction Area.

An adjustable tilting weir and four pipe dam connections are being proposed to facilitate control of ditch water levels (and associated shallow groundwater levels) within the Sizewell SSSI to ensure hydrological and hydrogeological conditions upstream within the SSSI remain in line with those that have been recorded prior to development. The tilting weir is designed to impound water during periods of low flow only. The pipe dam connections will replicate the existing hydraulic connections between upstream compartments of the SSSI and the current Leiston Drain.

The proposal lies within the Yox and Minsmere catchment.
