Published 20 March 2021
Applies to England
Details of the application
South Cumbria Rivers Trust Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a licence to remove the existing impounding works at Bowston Weir on the River Kent, Cumbria, at National Grid Reference SD 49708 96812. The proposal will entail the full removal of the existing structure and associated fish passes in their entirety. These will be replaced with a lower elevation rock ramp structure 20 metres downstream. The accumulated sediment upstream of the weir will be regraded, and a ‘proto-channel’ extending 140 metres upstream of the rock ramp will be excavated. The rock ramp will span a total length of 55 metres, and has been designed with the intention to reinstate sediment transport continuity and permit fish passage. If granted, the works are proposed to commence from June – September 2021.
