On 17 December 2020, the Office of Government Property launched its annual State of the Estate report, assessing the efficiency and sustainability of property in the government estate.
We have made great progress over the last year:
- we have exceeded the £5 billion target to release public land through disposals
- over the course of a year, the government estate has reduced by over 70,000 m2 - the equivalent of 10 football pitches
- vacancy rate in the central estate represents just 0.6% of the central estate; the average in the private sector is 7%
Key themes highlighted in the report this year include how the government has rapidly adapted service provision since March to continue to deliver essential public services and the progress being made on increasing investment in our government’s assets and digital capabilities, in line with the government’s reform agenda and net zero carbon commitment.
