Inspecting street works
Code of practice for highway authorities on how to carry out inspections of street works.
Documents
Details
This code of practice gives guidance on inspecting street works including:
- investigatory inspections and works
- improvement plans
- fee arrangements
- reports
- inspections involving coring
Inspections take place when works are:
- in progress, making sure appropriate signs and barriers are in place to protect workers and road users
- finished, making sure the site has been properly cleared and the road reinstated to a proper standard
The third edition of the code came into force on 1 April 2023, replacing all previous versions. It reflects:
-
the changes the government committed to implement following this consultation, in particular:
- use performance to calculate the number of sample inspections of reinstatements carried out each year, so that poor performers are inspected more frequently
- amend the way an inspection unit is calculated
- consolidate the fee that needs to be paid for reinspections of reinstatements that have failed a previous inspection
