Supported Housing Review 2023

Details

The government is committed to ensuring supported housing is good quality and enables people who need it to live as independently as possible.

The Supported Housing Review provides a snapshot of supported housing supply, demand, funding and commissioning across Great Britain and builds on the Supported Accommodation Review in 2016. The findings will help inform action that needs to be taken to deliver supported housing.

Key estimates include:

  • There are 634,000 units of supported housing

  • 215,770 Specified Accommodation claims recorded on the Housing Benefit system (34 per cent of all supported housing).

  • Between 179,600 and 388,100 additional units of supported housing are needed to meet current unmet need (91,100 for working age people and between 88,600 and 297,000 for older people).

  • By 2040, between 361,700 and 640,700 additional units of supported housing is needed to meet overall demand (100,000 for working age people and between 261,700 and 540,700 for older people).

  • The research found: ‘there are significant long-term challenges in sustaining the current supply of supported housing as well as numerous barriers in developing new provision.’
