The Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s annual report to the Home Secretary comments on:

  • the evolving technological capabilities of surveillance camera systems and their associated ability to increasingly intrude upon the privacy of citizens

  • cyber security and the risk for intrusion on citizens both by lawful operators of surveillance camera systems and those who seek to ‘hack’ in to systems

  • the ability of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner (SCC) to regulate an improvement in the operation of surveillance camera systems in public

  • the call for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), one of the largest non military databases in the UK, to be placed on a statutory footing by the government

  • the National Surveillance Camera Strategy for England and Wales which was published in March 2017
