Syndromic surveillance summary: 2 December 2021 week 47

During week 47, there were increases in NHS 111 eye problems calls and GP in hours consultations for conjunctivitis in children under 5 years of age.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, there was an increase in NHS 111 calls for cold and flu, mainly in the 45 to 64 years age group. Calls for eye problems also increased, notably in children aged 1 to 4 years.
GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, GP consultation rates for respiratory infections and pharyngitis and scarlet fever continued to increase in children aged 1 to 14 years. Consultation rates for conjunctivitis continued to increase, with marked increases particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 years.
GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections continued to increase in children aged 5 to 14 years. There was a small increase in contacts for influenza-like illness with increases observed in London, South East and West Midlands.
Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections have stabilised, though remain slightly higher than seasonally expected levels. During week 47 COVID-19-like attendances remained stable nationally.
Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ambulance calls for most syndromic indicators decreased or remained stable nationally. Ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ increased during the weekend of 27 and 28 November in line with the level 3 cold weather alert in place across parts of England.
