Syndromic surveillance summary: 25 November 2021 week 46

During week 46, there were national increases in selected acute respiratory infection type indicators across all systems, particularly in children under 15 years.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, there was an increase in NHS 111 calls for cold or flu and cough, mainly in children aged 1 to 14 years. Calls for difficulty breathing also increased in children aged 1 to 14 years. Additionally, there were increases noted in diarrhoea calls in the 5 to 14 years age group.
GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, GP consultation rates for upper and lower respiratory tract infections and pharyngitis or scarlet fever increased in children 1 to 14 years. Consultations for vomiting increased (particularly in children aged 5 to 14 years) and are now just above baseline levels.
GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections increased in children. Contacts for gastroenteritis and vomiting increased in the 5 to 14 years age group.
Emergency department (ED) syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections increased and remain slightly higher than seasonally expected levels; increases have been particularly noted in children aged 1 to 14 years. There have been increases in acute bronchiolitis however numbers of attendances remain below seasonally expected levels. During week 46, COVID-19-like attendances remained stable nationally.
Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, ambulance call-outs for all syndromic indicators decreased or remained stable nationally.
