Syndromic surveillance summary: 20 January 2022 week 2

During week 2, COVID-19-like emergency department (ED) attendances and NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ decreased across all age groups and regions. Other acute respiratory infections decreased and influenza-like illness syndromic indicators remained stable.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 2, NHS 111 calls and assessments for fever increased in children aged 5 to 14 years old. NHS 111 calls and assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ decreased nationally across all regions, but there were small increases noted in children aged 5 to 14 years old.
GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 2, GP consultation rates for respiratory illness, including COVID-19-like consultations decreased.
GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 2, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infection and influenza-like illness decreased and remained below seasonally expected levels. There was a small increase in ‘impact of cold’ contacts noted during the weekend of 15 and 16 January in line with recent cold weather alerts in England.
Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 2, COVID-19-like ED attendances continued to decrease nationally, except in children aged 5 to 14 years. There were also decreases in attendances for respiratory indicators, which remained below seasonally expected levels.
Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 2, COVID-19-like ambulance calls continued to decrease. All other indicators were stable or decreasing and at or below baseline levels.
