Syndromic surveillance summary: 3 February 2022 week 4

During week 4 there were increases in selected respiratory indicators in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years, although activity remains within seasonally expected levels. Influenza-like illness indicators remained stable.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 4, NHS 111 calls for respiratory indicators including cold or flu and cough increased, particularly in children. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting also increased in children aged under 15 years old.
GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 4, GP consultation rates across a number of respiratory indicators (including upper and lower respiratory tract infections) continued to increase, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.
GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 4, GP out of hours contacts for acute respiratory infection continued to increase amongst children aged 15 years and under but remain within seasonally expected levels. Contacts for gastroenteritis and vomiting to increase nationally in children aged 1 to 4 years but remain within seasonally expected levels.
Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 4, COVID-19-like emergency department attendances continued to decrease nationally. Attendances for acute respiratory infections continued to increase in those aged under 15 years. Emergency department attendances for gastroenteritis increased, predominantly in children aged 1 to 4 years.
Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
COVID-19-like and difficulty breathing ambulance calls remained stable during week 4. ‘Cardiac and respiratory arrest’ and ‘overdose, ingestion and poisoning’ calls increased.
