Syndromic surveillance summary: 31 March 2022 week 12

There were further increases observed in ‘COVID-19-like’ syndromic indicators during week 12, including emergency department attendances and NHS 111 calls. Overall, gastroenteritis indicators (including vomiting and diarrhoea) stabilised during week 12.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 12, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ continued to increase, particularly in adults. There were also further increases in cold, flu and cough calls and assessments. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting decreased during week 12, but remain above seasonally expected levels.
GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 12, GP in hours ‘COVID-19-like’ consultations continued to increase, particularly in the over 45 years age groups. Upper and lower respiratory tract infections both continued to increase but remain below seasonally expected levels. Consultations for pharyngitis and scarlet fever increased, mainly in the 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years age groups. There were decreases in diarrhoea and vomiting during week 12, but both remain above seasonally expected levels.
GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 12, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections remained stable and below expected levels. Influenza-like illness contacts are also stable but just above seasonally expected levels. Gastroenteritis indicators are currently decreasing or stable.
Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 12, COVID-19-like emergency department attendances decreased slightly, however the overall general trend is still increasing, particularly in adults aged 15 years and over. Attendances for influenza-like illness continued to increase (particularly in the 15 to 44 years age group), and are now above seasonally expected levels. Gastroenteritis attendances remained stable overall during week 12.
Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
Nationally, ‘COVID-19-like’ and difficulty breathing calls remained stable during week 12.
