Syndromic surveillance summary: 12 October 2023 week 40

Reporting week 40: 2 October to 8 October 2023
During week 40, emergency department (ED) acute bronchiolitis attendances continued to increase in children aged under 5 years, in line with expected seasonal trends. ED COVID-19-like attendances decreased nationally, but remain elevated in groups of those aged over 45 years, however NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ continued to increase. Other syndromic acute respiratory infection indicators, including GP in-hours upper respiratory tract infection consultations, continue to increase in line with seasonal expectations.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 40, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ and ‘sore throat’ increased nationally. Calls for vomiting continued to increase during week 40, mostly in children aged 1 to 4 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 40, there were further increases in GP in-hours consultations for upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tract infections, but in line with seasonally expected trends. There were also increases observed in influenza-like illness consultations, however these increases were small and within seasonal expectations.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system
Daily GP out-of-hours contact data was not received from 4 August 2022 until 31 March 2023 due to technical problems. We have been working closely with our data provider and the daily syndromic feed recommenced on 1 April 2023. We are currently evaluating the daily data received and will resume publication of the weekly bulletin when this process is complete.
