Reporting week 45: 6 November to 12 November 2023
During week 45, emergency department (ED) acute bronchiolitis attendances continued to increase in children aged under 1 year and 1 to 4 years. There were further increases in most acute respiratory infection syndromic indicators in children aged under 5 years, in line with expected trends. ED and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators continued to decrease nationally.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 45, total NHS 111 calls continued increasing in children aged under 1 year and 1 to 4 years. There were also increases in cough and difficulty breathing calls in these age groups. NHS 111 calls for vomiting increased, in line with seasonally expected trends, mainly in children aged under 1 year and 1 to 4 years. Calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ remained stable during week 45.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 45 there were continuing increases in GP consultations for upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Increases were observed across all age groups, but most notable were lower respiratory tract infections in children aged under 1 year. Consultations for bronchiolitis continued to increase in children aged under 1 year and 1 to 4 years, in line with seasonally expected levels. Consultations for gastroenteritis and vomiting increased during week 45 and are currently above baseline.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 45, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections continued to increase, in line with seasonal trends, largely due to further increases in children. Daily out-of-hours contacts for acute bronchitis/bronchiolitis increased, particularly in children aged under 5 years old.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 45, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections and acute bronchiolitis/bronchitis continued to increase, particularly in children under 5 years of age. ED COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 45, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable while ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ calls decreased below baseline levels.
