Reporting week 47: 20 November to 26 November 2023
During week 47, emergency department (ED) acute bronchiolitis attendances stabilised nationally. There were further increases in a range of acute respiratory infection indicators in line with seasonally expected trends. ED and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators stabilised during week 47, after several weeks of decreasing activity.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, NHS 111 calls for cough and difficulty breathing remained stable overall, but there were further small increases in infants aged under one year while calls decreased in children aged one to 4 years. NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ increased, most notably in calls in children aged 5 to 14 years.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, there were further increases observed in GP in-hours consultations for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Rates are increasing across all age groups, but particularly noted in children, and within seasonally expected limits. Bronchiolitis consultations continued to increase in children aged under one year in line with seasonally expected levels. COVID-19-like and influenza-like illness consultations were both stable during week 47.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections continued to increase, in line with seasonal expectations. Contacts for vomiting increased, particularly in children aged under one year and aged one to 4 years.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ED attendances for acute bronchiolitis stabilised nationally and in children aged under one year and aged one to 4 years; activity is currently below seasonally expected levels. There were further small increases in acute respiratory infection attendances during week 47, while attendances for influenza-like illness remained stable and at seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 47, ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable and are currently within seasonally expected limits. There was an increase in daily calls for ‘impact of heat/cold’ over the weekend of 25 and 26 November, however calls remain at levels expected for the time of year.
