Reporting week 40: 30 September to 6 October

During week 40, syndromic acute respiratory infection indicators increased, particularly in adults, in line with seasonally expected trends. COVID-19-like and influenza-like illness indicators increased, particularly in adult age groups.

During week 40, NHS 111 calls for acute respiratory infection increased, particularly in children aged 1 to 4 years and adults 45 years and over. NHS 111 online assessments for acute respiratory infection also increased. Both calls and online assessments for gastroenteritis indicators (diarrhoea and vomiting) were stable overall, though there were increases in child age groups under 15 years.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 40, GP consultation rates for upper respiratory tract infections, including COVID-19-like and influenza-like illness consultations, increased, particularly in those aged 15 years and over. Lower respiratory tract infection consultation rates also increased, in line with the seasonal expectations.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During the week 40, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illness continued to increase, in line with expected seasonal activity.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 40, emergency department (ED) attendances for acute respiratory infections increased. COVID-19-like ED attendances also increased, particularly in those aged 65 years and over. ED attendances for asthma were stable overall, however asthma attendances decreased in children aged under 15 years, while attendances remained elevated in adults aged 15 to 44 years and increased further in those aged 45 to 64 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During the week 40, daily ambulance calls for ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ increased, in line with the seasonal expectation in terms of both the trend and level of the baseline.
