Syndromic surveillance summary: 17 October 2024 week 41

1. Reporting week 41: 7 October to 13 October
During week 41 there were further increases across a range of acute respiratory infection indicators in line with seasonally expected activity. There was a decrease observed in COVID-19-like ED attendances.
2. Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 41, NHS 111 calls and NHS 111 online assessments for acute respiratory infections continued to increase in line with expected baseline. Calls and online assessments for vomiting also increased, particularly in children aged under 15 years.

3. GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 41, GP in-hours consultation rates for upper and lower respiratory tract infections increased in line with seasonally expected trends, particularly in the 1-4 and 15 and over years age groups. There were also small increases in influenza-like illness consultations, in line with seasonal expectations, observed particularly in adult age groups. COVID-19-like consultations were stable during week 41 with no further increases observed in any age group.

4. GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 41, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections continued to increase, in line with expected seasonal activity.

5. Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 41, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections increased across all age groups except children aged 5 to 14 years. COVID-19-like attendances decreased across all age groups. There were further increases in attendances for ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ in children aged under 5 years however levels remained below those expected for the time of year.

6. Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 41, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable overall while calls for ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ decreased.
