Reporting week 25: 17 June to 23 June
During week 25, syndromic indicators for ‘impact of heat’ increased, but remained with expected levels, in line with the warm weather during the weekend of 22 to 23 June. There was also an increase in GP in-hours consultations for allergic rhinitis coinciding with expected seasonal grass pollen activity. ED and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators continued to increase during week 25, particularly in age groups over 15 years.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 25, there were increases observed in NHS 111 calls and NHS 111 online assessments for ‘heat exposure and sunburn’ and insect bites, in line with the warmer weather over the weekend of 22/23 June: calls and online assessments remain at or below expected levels. There was also an increase in calls and online assessments for eye problems, particularly in the 5 to 14 years age group, in line with expected grass pollen activity.
Please note that recent updates to the NHS Pathways clinical tool used by NHS 111 have affected the reported levels of certain syndromic indicators. As a result of these changes all individual respiratory indicators have been removed from this report and replaced with a generic ‘acute respiratory infections’ calls indicator. GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 25, GP consultations for allergic rhinitis increased sharply but overall remained within seasonally expected levels and consistent with expected grass pollen activity. COVID-19-like consultations continued to increase in age groups 15 years and older. Gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting indicators remained stable but above seasonally expected levels. Consultations for measles and whooping cough continued at above expected levels during week 25.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 25, GP out-of-hours contacts for gastroenteritis increased slightly with the overall activity remaining above seasonally expected levels. The number of daily ‘heat or sunstroke’ and insect bites contacts increased in line with the warm weather during the weekend 22 to 23 June.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 25, COVID-19-like ED attendances continued to increase, particularly in the age groups 15 years and over. Attendances for acute respiratory infections in general also increased slightly and remained above baseline levels. Attendances for ‘heat or sunstroke’ increased in line with the warmer weather during the weekend of 22 to 23 June but attendances remained in line with expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 25, ambulance calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ increased in line with the warm weather over the weekend of 22 to 23 June. There were also further increases in difficulty breathing and ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ calls.
