During week 48 acute bronchiolitis indicators across several syndromic systems stabilised or decreased in children aged under 1 and 1 to 4 years. In general, acute respiratory infection indicators increased across adult age groups but stabilised in young children. Emergency department influenza-like illness attendances increased during week 48.

During week 48, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for acute respiratory infections started to stabilise in children aged under 15 years but increased across adult age groups (aged 15 years and over). There were increases in vomiting calls, in line with seasonal expectations, however the increases were particularly noted in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

During week 48, consultation rates for influenza-like illness increased, but remained at seasonally expected levels. Bronchiolitis consultations continued to increase in children under 1 year of age but decreased in children aged 1 to 4 years. Vomiting consultations increased in the 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years age groups. There was an increase in the consultation rate for measles during week 48, with activity above expected levels.

During week 48 GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections stabilised in the under 1 and 1 to 4 years age groups. Contacts for acute bronchitis/bronchiolitis and ‘difficulty breathing, wheeze or asthma’ decreased in children aged under 5 years. There was an increase in fever contacts during week 48, notably in children aged 1 to 4 and 5 to 14 years.

During week 48, ED attendances for acute bronchiolitis remained stable in children aged under 1 year but decreased in the 1 to 4 years age group. Influenza-like illness attendances increased across all age groups over 1 year of age, but with notable increases in attendances in the North East, East Midlands and West Midlands regions.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 48, ambulance dispatch calls for difficulty breathing were stable but remained just above expected levels. Calls for ‘impact of heat or cold’ returned to expected levels.
