Reporting week 44: 28 October to 3 November
During week 44, syndromic indicators for acute respiratory infections, lower respiratory tract infections and acute bronchiolitis continued increasing in children aged under 1 and 1 to 4 years in line with seasonally expected trends and levels. There were further decreases observed in COVID-19-like Emergency Department attendances and GP in-hours consultations.

During week 44, NHS 111 triaged calls for acute respiratory infections remained stable overall and below expected levels, but calls continued to increase in children under 1 year. NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for diarrhoea and vomiting decreased.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, GP in-hours consultation rates for upper respiratory tract infections decreased, while lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) remained stable and in line with expected levels. LRTI rates continued to increase in children aged under 1 year. There was a further increase observed in bronchiolitis consultations, particularly in children aged under 5 years, but rates remain in line with seasonally expected activity.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections remained stable overall, however there were increases observed in children aged under 1 year. There was an increase in contacts for acute bronchitis, particularly in the children aged under 5 years. There was also an increased observed in difficulty breathing/wheeze/asthma contacts in children aged under 1 year.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections continued to increase in children aged under 5 years. There was also a further increase in ‘acute bronchiolitis or bronchitis’ attendances particularly in children aged under 1 year, in line with expected seasonal trends. There was a small increase in attendances for influenza-like illness, but activity remained in line with seasonally expected levels. COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease during week 44.

During week 44, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing decreased and are at seasonally expected levels.
