During week 6, syndromic indicators for acute respiratory infections generally decreased in children, although there were further small increases in consultations for upper respiratory tract infections in the GP in-hours system. NHS 111 triaged calls for eye problems and GP in-hours consultations for conjunctivitis increased in children aged 1 to 4 years.

During week 6, NHS 111 triaged calls for acute respiratory infections were stable. Triaged calls for diarrhoea continued to increase nationally and remained above seasonally expected levels. Triaged calls for eye problems continued to increase in young children under the age of 5 years.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, GP in-hours consultation rates for upper respiratory tract infections were stable overall however there were further small increases observed in the age groups up to 44 years. Influenza-like illness rates continued to decrease overall, but activity remained above seasonally expected levels. ILI rates decreased across all age groups except infants aged less than 1 year where there was an increase. There was a further increase in conjunctivitis consultations, particularly noted in the 1 to 4 years age group.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, GP out-of-hours contacts for influenza-like illness were stable but remained above seasonally expected levels. There was a slight increase in gastroenteritis and vomiting in the 1 to 4 years age group.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections continued to decrease overall but there were also decreases observed in children aged 14 years and under. Attendances for influenza-like illness continued to decrease but remained above seasonally expected levels. Gastroenteritis attendances increased in line with seasonally expected trends.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 6, ambulance calls for ‘difficulty breathing’ and ‘chest pain’ decreased, returning to seasonally expected levels. Calls for ‘headache’, ‘unconscious or passing out’ and ‘overdose/ingestion/poisoning’ also decreased and are below expected levels.
